What is Direct Fuel Injection?

Direct Fuel Injection is a form of fuel delivery system that allows the gasoline engines to burn fuel more effectively, meanwhile optimizing power, generating cleaner emissions and elevating fuel economy. It is one of the variants of fuel injection housed in modern 2-stroke and 4-stroke gasoline engines. The gasoline engines need just 3 elements to work -- fuel, air, and spark. The stark differences between the direct injection engine and the conventional gasoline engine are how they deliver fuel and how the fuel infuses with the incoming air. These are the elements that make a huge difference in the overall fuel efficiency of the vehicle’s engine.

How does Direct Fuel Injection Engines Work?

Before getting down straight to the working of the direct fuel injection engines, let’s have a quick sneak-peak of the working module of the standard gasoline engine. Talking about the standard gasoline engine, with the help of a pump, the fuel is transported from the fuel tank, through the fuel lines and into the fuel injectors that are placed into the main engine. These injectors then spray gasoline into the air intake manifold, which then mixes with the air to form a fine mist. Direct fuel injection system doesn’t allow gasoline and air to pre-mix, the air travels via intake-manifold while the fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, compressed via piston and ignited via a spark which in turn generates an explosion which drives the piston downward, producing power.
