How Electronic Stability Control Works
November 16, 2017
Electronic stability control gives drivers an opportunity to regain control of their vehicles, during the emergency conditions, where the possibility of defense in those situations would otherwise be very difficult or impossible. The most common reason why drivers often lose control of their own vehicle is due to steering too sharply, which causes a sudden shift of the center of gravity of the vehicle and the increased risk of the vehicle rolling over or skidding. Also, the surface of the road, poor road conditions and climatic changes also increase the risk of over steering and under steering. Following events can be controlled with the inclusion of Electronic Stability Control
  • An unplanned and unanticipated event where you are forced to maneuver or brake quickly.
  • When you approach a steep curve very quickly and you need to steer sharply.
How does Electronic Stability Control Works? There are 6 main components that work the entire electronic stability control system- Wheel speed sensors, control module, steering angle sensor, yaw rate sensor, accelerometer and Hydraulic modulator. Electronic stability control is always in an active mode. A microcomputer attached to the system monitors and continuously retrieves information from all the sensors- approximately 25 times a second, to gauge and check whether the driver’s steering input is working in harmony with the wheels of the car and whether the car is taking the actual direction. If the car is moving in the direction opposite to the steering input, the ESC detects the problem immediately and reacts in accordance to it, irrespective of the driver’s command to the vehicle. This advanced safety system employs the braking system to steer the vehicle back on track and initiate a reduction in engine power. According to a study, electronic stability control could prevent up to 80% of all skidding crashes.
