Jotting down the technical terminology of speed sensors, the part has a very vital significance in the overall working of the vehicle. A speed sensor in a vehicle generates a steady magnetic pulse in the pattern similar to a wave which is directly proportional to the speed of the vehicle. In simpler terms, if the vehicle is moving at a high speed it will generate high-frequency waves which will be proportional to the speed of the vehicle. The Electronic Control Unit of an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) deals directly with the speed sensors and receives information regarding various electrical mechanisms such as fuel injection, ignition, cruise control, torque, and wheels lock-up.
Replacing a vehicle speed sensor isn’t a very difficult task; you just need few tools and a step-by-step guide to get through the whole process. A vehicle speed sensors are externally-mounted and positioned on the transmission, secured in place by one or two bolts.
Things you’ll need
- Open-ended wrench
- Jack Stand
- Socket extension
- Directional light
- New speed sensor shaft
- New vehicle speed sensor
- Engine lubricant
Steps to replace vehicle Speed Sensors
Step 1: First, park the car in a safe spot and turn the engine off.
Step 2: Let the engine cool off before getting down to the business.
Step 3: Using the jack kit, jack up the front part of your car until there is sufficient space for you to crawl underneath the car.
Step 4: Now, lying on your back, look up and start looking for the speed sensor. It is located on the bottom of the transmission. It is a small plug that is jutting out of the transmission. You’ll see an electrical connector attachedto it.
Step 5: The electrical connector will have a release tab, just squeeze it to remove the connector from the sensor.
Step 6: Now, using the open-ended wrench, pull the speed sensor in-between it and twist it counterclockwise, until the speed sensor is loose enough to pull out from the transmission.
Step 7: Now, put the new speed sensor in place and instead of revolving it counterclockwise, twist it clockwise to secure it in place.
Step 8: Again, plug the electrical connector on the sensor, see if everything is done and slide out from under the car.
