Every car is equipped with a flywheel. Flywheels are heavy and robust metal disks which are 12 to 15 inches wide in diameter. Gear teeth are carved into its diameter. Flywheels are connected to the rear of the crankshaft, which is between the engine and the transmission. When these flywheels are connected to an automatic transmission, they are usually known as flex plates, since they are lighter in weight than when connected with manual transmission.

Steps to Replace an Engine Flywheel
Step 1: First, park your car on a level surface.
Step 2: Jack up your car at least 600mm off the floor so that there is enough place for you to slide underneath the car and access the flywheel.
Step 3: Now, open the hood of your car and disconnect the positive cable from its terminal point on the battery.
Step 4: Remove the driveshaft connected to the rear axle connector. Disconnect the differential from the driveshaft along with bolts and nuts that is keeping the drive shaft in place. Remove these with a help of wrench.
Step 5: Place an empty pan or bucket underneath the point where drive shaft meets the transmission so that any fluid that pours out should fall into the pan.
Step 6: Now, remove other components like transmission cooler lines from the transmission, the speedometer cable and the shift linkage line with the help of a wrench.
Step 7: Now, it is time to remove the transmission which is held in place with the help of retaining bolts. You will see the flywheel by pulling the transmission towards the back of the car.
Step 8: With the help of a wrench, loosen the retaining bolts with which the flywheel is connected to the crankshaft.
Step 9: Place the new flywheel and put the retaining bolts back in place.
Step 10: Reattach the transmission and make sure the torque converter is aligning correctly with the hole to the flywheel.
Step 11: Re-install the driveshaft by combining the universal joint with the rear axle connector and screwing the U-bolts back in place.
