The shift cables are known for bridging the gap between or connecting the gear shifter to the shifting arm of the engine. A sleeve shaped car component homesteads the shit cable to safeguard it from dirt and grime. The function of a shift cable is to provide flexibility or free movement to the shifting arm as it shifts gear from first, second, third to fourth gear. The cable is used for adjusting the arm when the gear is placed in reverse.
Due to continuous back and forward movements the shift cable is prone to wear and tear which demands a replacement as soon as you to get the signs of impending failure. Though the shift cable removal isn’t expensive, you can carry out the task yourself at home with ease.

- 2 Adjustable Wrenches- 1/2 inch & 9/16 inch
- Flat-head screwdriver

Steps to Replace Shift Cables from an Automatic Transmission
Step 1: Before you begin with the replacement make sure the car’s parking brakes are set.
Step 2: Now place the car on a level ground and secure all the four wheels of the car with car ramps.
Step 3: Now get under the hood of the car and with the help of a 1/2 adjustable wrench lose the nuts on both the battery cable ends.
Step 4: Again with the same 1/2 adjustable wrench, unscrew all the screws that are holding the floor shifter in place.
Step 5: With the help of a flat-head screwdriver pry away the locking clip from the shifter handle. Now, raise the handle to remove it.
Step 6: Now it’s time to remove the console. For this, you need to remove the four screws at the bottom of the console.
Step 7: Reach out to the floor shifter by raising the console.
Step 8: Disconnect all the wires that are connected to the console and pry away all the clips that are connected to the wires.
Step 9: With the assistance of a flat-head screwdriver separate the wire connectors.
Step 10: Pull out all the clips from the shifter cable brace. Pull out the cable form the shifter by removing the clips from the cable end.
Step 11: Now moving to the bottom of the car, using a 1/2 adjustable wrench, lose the nuts on the shifter cable by turning the nut counter clock-wise.
Step 12: Pull the cable out and off the shift lever on the side of the transmission.
Step 13: Now, pull out the shifter cable through the floor from the inside of the vehicle and remove it.
